Project Overview

Honeywell had a closed adipic acid plant in Hopewell, Virginia located within a large chemical complex that remained in operation. Phoenix Equipment purchased the idled plant assets and assumed responsibility for both equipment disposition and complete dismantlement of the facility.

Rather than treating liquidation and demolition as separate projects, Phoenix managed them in parallel. Process equipment was marketed and sold while dismantlement progressed, allowing asset recovery and site clearance to move forward under one coordinated scope. The approximately $1.75 million project ran from March 2007 through October 2007.

The Challenge

The adipic acid plant sat within a chemical complex that remained in operation, so dismantlement had to be coordinated around ongoing site activity. Phoenix also needed to recover reusable equipment before demolition progressed while managing several critical lifts during the removal work.

Asset Liquidation & Dismantlement

Phoenix conducted an orderly liquidation of the adipic acid plant while dismantlement moved forward. Reusable equipment was marketed for resale while the physical removal work advanced.

The dismantlement included several critical lifts and was coordinated within the operating chemical complex. Phoenix completed the work safely in October 2007.

Project Outcome

Honeywell was paid for its idled plant assets while avoiding the cost of dismantling and clearing the facility itself. Phoenix completed the equipment liquidation and plant removal safely, leaving a broom-clean footprint at no cost to Honeywell.

Project Highlights

  • Client: Honeywell
  • Location: Hopewell, Virginia
  • Facility: Adipic Acid Plant
  • Site Conditions: Closed Process Plant Within an Operating Chemical Complex
  • Phoenix Scope: Plant Acquisition, Equipment Liquidation, Asset Recovery and Dismantlement
  • Execution: Equipment Liquidation Conducted Alongside Plant Dismantlement (See Liquidation)
  • Major Challenge: Several Critical Lifts
  • Project Timeframe: March 2007 – October 2007
  • Project Value: Approximately $1.75 Million
  • Safety: Completed Safely
  • Owner Outcome: Paid for Idled Assets / Broom-Clean Footprint at No Cost

Combining Asset Recovery With Site Clearance

Phoenix combined asset liquidation and dismantlement so equipment recovery could continue while the idled plant was being removed.

For Honeywell, the result was financial recovery from assets it no longer needed and a broom-clean footprint without taking on the dismantlement cost.
