Glass lined distillation columns are typically used in chemical process application such as distillation, stripping, absorption or reaction in especially corrosive applications that are too aggressive for metals like stainless steel. Glass lined columns can be referred to as Glasteel or fluorpolymer lined and often include ceramic internals in addition to the glass lined shell. They can range in size from 12" to 84" + diameters. Glass lined columns are designed either packed or with trays to aide in the separation - whether it be distillation, stripping, absorption or reaction. How a distilling column works: Feed Liquid is introduced into a series of trays or into the packing material where gravity pulls it downward toward a boiler. As the fluids reach their individual boiling points they become vapor. The vapors pass up the column through the cascading feed. Once they reach the top – the vapors are condensed and saved as distillate. The process can be batch or continuous depending on the feed supply and demand.
Industry leaders in the building of glass lined columns include Pfaudler, DeDietrich, Ceramic Coatings and Thaletec GmbH among others.
