Function

Absorber towers work to allow the product material – often nitric or sulfuric acid to circulate through it. Meanwhile, gaseous nitrous oxide (or sulfur trioxide, or other product) is introduced, where the acid can absorb it, increasing its concentration. When the process is complete, the fortified acid is removed. An airstream re-oxidizes the remaining NOx (or Sox, etc.), which is then compressed, catalyzed, and exhausted.

Various chemical compounds can be removed from the “tail gasses” before there are expelled, depending on the properties used in the absorber materials, making towers useful in many applications.

 

How It Works

The tower’s 36 trays are increasingly spaced as they go up the inside of the shaft. Gaseous nitrous oxide is introduced into the bottom of the tower. Water pumped into the perforated upper trays filters through, coming into contact with the nitrous, sulfuric, or other oxides, absorbing it, and increasing its acidity as it makes its way to the bottom of the tower. The resulting chemical reaction produces heat, which is removed from the absorption tower through cooling coils seated inside many of the trays. At the same time, the gas loses oxides as it rises through the water toward the top of the tower.

The greater number of trays an absorber tower contains and the greater their volume, helps achieve greater recovery of NOx into nitric acid. At the same time, this greater capacity reduces emission levels. Adding a second absorber tower to an existing operation can achieve significant ecological advantages and regulatory benefits.
