Project Overview
A large Chinese chemical producer needed to modernize an existing hydrazine production facility that relied on older process technology. Rather than develop a completely new plant from the ground up, the company evaluated a complete hydrazine hydrate facility formerly operated by Arch Chemicals in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
The plant used the Ketazine process and was offered with its associated process know-how, giving the buyer access to both the physical production assets and the technical basis for operating them as an integrated system.
Phoenix Equipment acquired the plant and associated know-how, identified the Chinese buyer, and managed the dismantlement, match-marking, packing, and relocation preparation required to move the facility from the United States to China.
The Challenge
The buyer was already producing hydrazine but wanted to move away from an older production route. To modernize the operation, it needed a complete process configuration and the technical knowledge required to support a different production technology.
For Arch Chemicals, the challenge was different. The hydrazine plant was no longer part of its production strategy, but the facility remained within an industrial complex that continued to operate. Any sale therefore had to address both asset recovery and the safe removal of the idled plant from the site.
Why the Arch Hydrazine Plant Fit the Project
The Lake Charles facility used the Ketazine process for hydrazine hydrate production. The acquisition gave the buyer access to the Ketazine route as an alternative to the older Raschig and urea-based processes used in its existing operation.
The transaction included more than individual pieces of used equipment. The buyer acquired a complete hydrazine hydrate process plant, associated Ketazine process technology and know-how, and major process equipment already configured as part of an integrated system.
That combination was especially important for a producer seeking to modernize an existing operation. The buyer could evaluate a complete process configuration rather than assemble a new facility from unrelated reactors, columns, vessels, and heat exchangers.
Identifying the Right Buyer
After Arch Chemicals ceased hydrazine production at the Lake Charles facility, Phoenix acquired the plant and its associated process know-how and began marketing the opportunity internationally.
The eventual buyer was a large Chinese chemical producer with an existing hydrazine operation. Arch had a complete plant and process know-how it no longer intended to use. The buyer had an operating hydrazine business and wanted access to a different production platform. That technical fit made the transaction possible.
Dismantlement & Match-Marking for Relocation
Selling the plant was only part of the project. The equipment also had to be dismantled in a way that preserved the information needed for future reassembly.
Phoenix match-marked equipment and components, coordinated dismantlement and rigging, prepared the equipment for transport, and handled packing and inland freight. The scope also included removal and cleanup of additional structures at the Arch site.
The physical scale of the equipment made the project particularly demanding. The plant included four stainless steel process columns more than 200 feet tall and weighing over 200,000 pounds each. Phoenix managed the dismantlement and handling of these oversized components while working within an industrial complex that remained in operation.
Work began in November 2011 and was safely completed in June 2012.
Project Outcome
The Chinese producer acquired an integrated hydrazine production plant together with Ketazine process technology and associated know-how, giving it a practical route to modernizing its existing manufacturing operation.
For Arch Chemicals, the transaction recovered value from both the plant equipment and the process know-how while also meeting the requirement to remove the idled facility from an active industrial site.
