BioEngineering 3,000 Liter Bioreactor System – Expansion Capacity in Under Three Months

Project Overview

A U.S.-based fermentation and contract fermentation company needed to add 3,000 liters of bioproduction capacity to support an expansion project. The challenge was both cost and timing. New fermentation equipment carried OEM lead times of approximately two years, while the capital required for a new system made the expansion difficult to justify.

Phoenix Equipment initially offered several available fermenters and fermentation systems, but none met the buyer's technical requirements. Phoenix then searched the broader market and identified an unused BioEngineering bioreactor system from a cancelled project. The equipment had never been installed, remained in its original crates, and represented more than $3 million of prior project investment.

The buyer ultimately brought the system into operation in less than three months, avoiding an approximately two-year OEM lead time.

The Challenge

The buyer needed to add 3,000 liters of production capacity without waiting approximately two years for new equipment or committing the capital required for a newly manufactured system.

The requirement was also technically specific. The buyer needed a production bioreactor system that could fit its fermentation process, so simply finding an available vessel was not enough. Process requirements, vessel design, metallurgy, controls, supporting equipment, and installation requirements all had to align with the intended application.

Searching Beyond Existing Inventory

Phoenix first reviewed its own inventory and presented several potential fermentation systems to the buyer, but none were the right fit. Rather than stopping there, Phoenix expanded the search beyond equipment already listed for sale and entered discussions with another client whose project had been cancelled.

That company had already purchased a complete BioEngineering bioreactor system but no longer needed it. The cancelled project created an opportunity to redirect an unused system to a company that needed the same type of production capacity.

An Unused Bioreactor System

The BioEngineering system had never been installed or operated and remained in its original crates in pristine condition. The package included two 300-liter seed vessels, two 800-liter seed vessels, and one 3,000-liter production vessel, all constructed of 316L stainless steel.

The seller had invested more than $3 million in the system before its project was cancelled. For the buyer, that created an opportunity to acquire unused production equipment without taking on the cost or manufacturing lead time associated with a new OEM order.

Technical Evaluation, Due Diligence & Financing

Finding the equipment was only the first step. Phoenix worked with the buyer over several weeks to confirm that the system met the technical requirements of the expansion project.

The evaluation went beyond vessel capacity. The buyer reviewed process requirements, vessel design, metallurgy, controls, supporting equipment, installation requirements, and how the system would fit into the new production environment. Phoenix provided the time and information needed for that review before the buyer moved forward.

The buyer also needed time to arrange financing for the acquisition and expansion. Phoenix worked within that schedule, allowing the technical review and financing process to progress together before the transaction was completed.

Acquisition, Removal & Delivery

Phoenix secured the equipment through a competitive purchase process and managed the physical transfer of the complete system. Phoenix coordinated the seller-side transaction, removal, packing, loading, and transportation to the buyer's facility.

Because the system had already been manufactured and remained preserved in its original packaging, the project could move quickly once the acquisition was completed.

Project Outcome

The buyer added 3,000 liters of production capacity in less than three months at a total project cost below $1 million, including acquisition, relocation, and reinstallation. That compared with more than $3 million of prior investment in the unused system and an approximately two-year lead time for comparable new equipment.

For the seller, the transaction recovered capital from a cancelled project and eliminated the need to continue storing and managing equipment it no longer required. Rather than remaining idle, the complete system was transferred to another industrial user.

A suitable process system does not always have to be sitting in a dealer's inventory to be available. In this case, Phoenix's existing equipment options did not provide the right fit, so the search moved into the broader market.

That search connected an unused BioEngineering system from a cancelled project with a buyer that needed the same production capacity on a much shorter schedule. The result was a stranded capital asset returned to productive use and an expansion project that could move forward far faster than a conventional new-equipment path.
