How Wiped Film / Thin Film Evaporators Work

Functionality: Thin Film / Wiped Film Evaporators consist of a large diameter jacketed vessel where the product is agitated and continuously removed from the vessel wall by scraper blades mounted on an agitator shaft. The material is spread as a thin film on the tube walls by the mechanical agitator, allowing the processing of:

  • Extremely viscous materials
  • Heat sensitive materials
  • Products that crystallize

Heating Medium: Steam or hot oil is typically used on the jacket side as the heating medium.

Applications: Thin Film / Wiped Film Evaporators are utilized in industries such as:

  • Chemicals
  • Polymers and resins
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Fats and oils
  • Food
  • Dyes and coatings

 

Operating Process

Feed Introduction:

  • Feed is added into the top and falls to a rotating distributor plate.
  • The feed is evenly distributed to the heat transfer wall.

 

Wiper Blades

  • Wiper blades create the thin film on the wall.
  • Slots in the blades dissipate bow wave and pump fluid down.

 

Heat Transfer and Vapor Generation:

  • Heat is transferred from the jacket, generating vapors.
  • Vapors flow radially inward and pass through the rotated entrainment separator.

 

Entrainment Separator:

  • Liquid droplets impinge on the entrainment separator and return to the heated wall.
  • Vapors condense on the internal condenser, with distillate flowing down tubes and out the distillate outlet.

 

Product and Vapor Exit:

  • The product continues down the wall and exits the bottoms outlet.
  • Non-condensed vapors exit the vacuum outlet.

 

Design Variations

Short Path with Internal Condenser:

  • Standard vacuum and high vacuum (short path) options.

 

Top Vapor Outlet (Counter-Current Flow):

  • Top vapor outlet design.
  • High viscosity design.
