Phoenix Offers Complete Ethanol Fermentation Plant

Overview

Phoenix Equipment Corporation presents an opportunity for investment in ethanol fermentation equipment. This plant is offered as a complete, turnkey plant on 110 acres in Jennings, La., or as individual components. The facility operated for six years until 2015 as a demonstration and pilot plant. The plant used a variety of feedstocks – including sugar cane, energy cane, sorghum, and bagasse – to produce up to 1.4 million gallons of lignocellulosic ethanol for biofuels per year.

The sale includes self-contained and fully integrated process equipment for feedstock handling and transfer, hydrolysis, liquefaction and enzyme propagation, fermentation of 5- and 6-carbon sugars, and ethanol recovery.

Fermenters

The sale includes several large-scale fermentation tanks for exposing mash to the enzymes which break down the starch into simpler sugars. The tanks also can accommodate yeast that feeds on the sugars and releases ethanol. The plant’s contents contain fermenters of various sizes, construction materials, and configurations such as:

  • 55,000-gallon stainless steel, 18-foot diameter x 25-foot depth fermenter
  • (3) 54,000-gallon carbon steel, 19-foot diameter, cone bottom fermenters
  • 18,200-gallon stainless steel 12 feet x19 feet fermenter, capable of fermenting at up to 10 psi
  • (3) 18,200-gallon carbon steel, 13-foot diameter, cone bottom fermenters
  • (4) 6,594-gallon 316L stainless steel fermenters, up to 30 psi, with control skid

Rectifier and Beer Stripper

The distillation process begins in the beer stripper, where low-ethanol beer drips down through holes in a series of trays. Steam rising from the bottom of the beer column, pulling alcohol and water from the beer. At the top of the stripper, the ethanol-impregnated steam is syphoned off and sent to the rectifier. Here, the 190-proof alcohol vapor gets cooled and condensed into a liquid state.

Hydrolyzer and Blow-Down Tank

This 1-inch thick, Inconel-lined, stainless steel hydrolyzer accepts acid-pretreated biomass and uses steam to convert the starch contained within it to C5 and C6 sugars. Microorganisms can consume these sugars to produce ethanol.

The plant also includes a 10-foot by 24-foot, stainless steel TK-205 replacement blow-down tank. Designed to handle 20,000 gallons at 150 psi, the tank receives the steamed and reacted feedstock from the hydrolyzer, where it then separates solids and liquids.

Alfa Laval Centrifuge

The centrifuge is capable of creating high-volume stillage throughputs for efficient dewatering, suspended solid extraction, and high cake dryness. Also, the centrifuge uses simple design and heavy-duty materials to generate high centrifugal forces while delivering dependable operations.

FKC Dewatering Screw Presses

Simple screw mechanics allow these two presses to slowly, continuously dewater feedstocks, draining off liquid along the passage while conveying the biomass to the press discharge for use in downstream operations. The presses feature designs and controls to customize speeds, screening, and other variables to maximize production and maintain outlet consistency for a variety of feedstocks.

Texas Power Screen

Manufactured by Phoenix (a Terex company), this mobile screen keeps dust particles to a minimum and removes plastic, metal, and other contaminants. The screen also assures the feedstock is reduced to the proper, uniform size for ethanol production.

Thermal Oxidizer

The thermal oxidizer destroys the pollutants produced during the drying of distiller’s dried grains with solubles, a byproduct of ethanol fermentation.

The oxidizer efficiently and ecologically burns off:

  • Nitrogen oxides
  • Carbon monoxides
  • Volatile organic compounds
  • Other hazardous materials.
