Used 32,000 TPY Sodium Cyanide Plant built in 1970. The purpose of the process is to manufacture sodium cyanide of a purity suitable for use as an intermediate for further chemical manufacture such as Dyes, Vitamins, Chelates etc.
The first reaction is the conversion of natural gas, ammonia and oxygen (from air), over a platinum catalyst, into a dilute HCN gas stream. The HCN gas stream is fed forward to the HCN absorber. The HCN is reacted in with 50% sodium hydroxide to form sodium cyanide and water. The sodium cyanide liquor cools the final product to 25 C.
