A colloid mill is a machine that is used to reduce the particle size of a solid suspended in liquid or to reduce the droplet size of a liquid suspended in another liquid. How does it do that? A high-speed, rotor-stator combo is at the center of the high-shear milling section of the colloid mill. After entering the milling chamber, the premixed material is forced into the rotor-stator gap by an impeller. As the media crosses the gap it encounters high-shear from the differential in speeds that rips the molecules apart and allows them to combine with materials that are normally difficult to add to one another. This combinability lends itself to increasing the stability of certain suspensions and emulsions. Colloid mills are used for the stabilization of food items like mayonnaise, buttered syrups, chocolate toppings, peanut butter and salad dressings. Industrially, colloid mills are used for asphalt emulsions, lubricants and greases, wax and clay emulsions, pigments and dyes for paints, adhesive compounds and silicon emulsions.
