Attritors, or stirred ball mills, work by use of shear and impact on a given product by another media. Material is put in fixed tank with grinding media (Carbon steel, stainless steel, ceramic, tungsten carbide, chrome steel balls are common). The balls are violently bounced around by a fast-moving shaft with arms causing them to impact and break down the material. Eventually, the original material is pulverized into a fine powder.
